Don’t let hearing problems get in the way of living your life

Hearing impairment can be caused by several factors, including old age, genetics, ear infections and noise-induced hearing loss. Most often, hearing loss occurs gradually, so you might not be aware of a noticeable deterioration of your hearing.

There are some signs and symptoms of hearing loss:

  • You frequently need others to repeat themselves
  • Sounds are muffled, or you think others are mumbling
  • You struggle to make out conversions in a crowd
  • You need to listen to the television or radio at a loud volume
  • You experience a ringing in one or both ears
  • You are unable to tell where noises are coming from
  • You struggle to hear voices on the phone

If you experience any of the above symptoms, we would recommend a complete hearing exam at London Medical.

It’s estimated that one in six individuals in the UK is affected by hearing loss. As we age, hearing loss becomes more common.

Symptoms

  • Feeling as if sounds are muffled or believing others are mumbling
  • Struggling to make out conversions in a crowd
  • Listening to the television or radio at a loud volume
  • Experiencing a ringing in one or both ears
  • Being unable to tell where noises are coming from
  • Struggling to hear voices on the phone
  • Finding men’s voices easier to understand than women’s or children’s

Treatments

If you hear persistent ringing in one or both ears, you might have tinnitus, which affects up to one in eight individuals in the UK.

Symptoms

Tinnitus is most often heard as ringing, but this can vary from person to person. It typically comes and goes and can vary in loudness and pitch. Tinnitus might also sound like:

  • Buzzing
  • Whistling
  • Humming
  • Clicking
  • Musical notes

Treatments

  • Tinnitus retraining therapy
  • Hearing aids
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Wax microsuction

Ear wax blockage is a common problem that occurs when an excessive buildup of cerumen — waxy oils and dead skin cells — blocks the ear canal and presses against the eardrum, causing hearing impairment.

Symptoms

  • Blocked sensation or fullness in the ear
  • Ear pain or discomfort
  • Hearing loss
  • Ringing or other noises (tinnitus)
  • Dizziness or vertigo

Wax microsuction treatment

Wax microsuction is the quickest and safest way to remove the build-up of wax in the ear. The treatment is conducted under a high-powered operating microscope, ensuring that all wax and debris are suctioned out fully, quickly and hygienically.

Dizziness is a common complaint, and it may indicate the presence of a balance disorder. There are many causes of balance problems — one of the most common is a problem with the inner ear balance system, called the vestibular system.

Symptoms

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Lightheadedness
  • Blurred/double vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unsteadiness
  • Fluctuating hearing loss
  • Tinnitus
  • Motion sickness
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Fullness in ears

Diagnosis

Our consultant audiologist will perform the following tests to identify the origin of the balance disorder:

  • Thorough history taking
  • Blood pressure measurements to rule out any blood pressure-related dizziness
  • Vestibular spinal reflex test – the vestibulospinal reflex uses the vestibular organs and skeletal muscle to maintain balance, posture and stability in an environment with gravity
  • Vestibular ocular reflex test (VOR) – VOR is a reflex eye movement that stabilises images on the retina during head movement. VOR testing is used to diagnose the cause of recurrent vertigo
  • Cerebellar test – to assess equilibrium and coordination
  • Positional test – to identify BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), which is the most common type of vertigo
  • Videonystagmography test (VNG) – VNG testing is a series of tests that evaluate the health of your inner ear and central motor function. It may uncover the root cause of your vertigo, dizziness or balance issues so your doctor or audiologist can treat it appropriately and effectively

Types of balance disorders

  • Benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular neuronitis
  • Vestibulopathy
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Head trauma
  • Ototoxic medication
  • Superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS)
  • Vestibular migraine

Balance disorder treatments

  • In-house ENT referral
  • Balance rehabilitation
  • Falls prevention clinic

Exposure to loud noises can cause long-term hearing damage. Noise-induced hearing loss can be temporary or permanent, so the best way to avoid this is by safeguarding your hearing.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the ear
  • Buzzing, ringing or other sounds in the ears
  • Difficulty hearing conversations in a noisy environment
  • Needing to turn up the volume of the tv or radio
  • Asking others to repeat themselves

How to prevent hearing loss

We can discuss your specific situation and make personalised recommendations on how to best protect your hearing. This includes bespoke ear protection such as:

  • Custom-made earplugs (including swim plugs, sleep plugs, noise plugs, musician plugs and shooting plugs)
  • Custom-made earphones
  • Solid noise and filtered noise plugs
